ABOUT YCES

The Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences (YCES) originates from The Case Laboratories for Electrochemical Studies (CLES) founded at Case Western Reserve University (Case) in the Fall of 1976 by Prof. Ernest B. Yeager, Case's Frank Hovorka Professor of Chemistry and an internationally renowned pioneering electrochemist. To extend this interdisciplinary philosophy into broader cooperation between Case and the industrial sector, CLES was renamed the Case Center for Electrochemical Sciences (CCES) in 1981. In 1994, CCES honored Dr. Yeager for his long service as Director of CLES and CCES by renaming the center the Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences (YCES).

At present YCES is composed of nine participating member Departments in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Macromolecular Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering. Additionally, the Center serves as a focal point for faculty involvement in larger scale research projects in areas of common interest. The Center sponsors three annual Workshops in the areas of Electrochemical Measurements, Electrochemical Engineering and Electrochemical Energy Storage and Energy Generation that attract participants from industry, government laboratories and academia. Every 18 months, YCES holds the ELTECH Lecture Series where a distinguished electrochemist spends about a week lecturing and interacting with students and faculty. Starting in the Fall of 2005, the Center will hold the biennial Ernest B. Yeager Frontiers in Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Technology Lectures for the presentation and discussion of advances and future challenges in these areas.

In addition, YCES maintains close links with the Local Section of the Electrochemical Society through seminars, symposia and other activities, which include the "Women in Electrochemistry" and "Electrochemistry: The New Generation" series. The center fosters a sense of community between students in electrochemistry at Case and at neighboring academic institutions, including Cleveland State University and Kent State University, by supporting the newly created Joint ECS/YCES Student Chapter. YCES is also involved with the community by promoting outreach K-12 education in the Greater Cleveland area.
